Well what are you “wading” for? Join WMEAC’s Stream Keepers today! \nWe host a network of volunteers who record information on streamside habitats\, physical characteristics and the aquatic macroinvertebrate populations living in our local waterways. Aquatic “macros” play a very important role in our freshwater ecosystems and include organisms such as insects\, clams\, snails\, worms\, and crayfish! \nAs a Stream Keeper\, you will gain experience in and out of the field on how to use equipment for collecting and identifying macros. DESCRIPTION:Line 5 is a 645-mile oil pipeline that transports 22 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids every day from western Canada to Eastern Canada through the Great Lakes. However\, this pipeline is currently in a state of significant deterioration\, posing a catastrophic risk to the precious freshwater resource that is the Great Lakes. \nThe Great Lakes are not only a vital source of drinking water for millions of people\, but they also support a diverse ecosystem and provide countless recreational opportunities. The potential for an oil spill from Line 5 threatens not only the lakes themselves but also the 400 rivers\, streams\, wetlands\, farmland\, and tribal lands that rely on them. \nDuring this Community Conversation\, we will discuss the environmental and economic risks posed by Line 5 and explore alternative solutions for transporting oil and gas that do not jeopardize our Great Lakes. SUMMARY:Foragers of a Modern Countryside: Bees & Environmental Change in West MI
DESCRIPTION:Public talk on the history of honeybees and beekeeping in the Great Lakes region & how honeybee-driven agriculture changed our landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is part of the 15th Annual Local History Roundtable conference. This year’s keynote presenter is Dr. Jennifer Bonnell\, Associate Professor of History at York University. She will speak about her forthcoming book\, Foragers of a Modern Countryside: Honeybees\, Agricultural Modernization\, and Environmental Change in the Great Lakes Region. \nRoughly one-third of the food crops we currently consume in North America require honeybees to produce food. These tiny-but-mighty pollinators are not native to the Americas\, and were not raised at scale until the late 1800s and early 1900s. As Europeans forced westward\, Michigan’s native crops that Indigenous people grew for centuries were replaced by new\, non-native crops that required these new\, non-native honeybees to grow. Fast forward to the early 2000s\, and enormous numbers of honeybees have vanished or died in what has been dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder. \nBonnell’s work breaks down the history of honeybees in the Great Lakes region\, how beekeepers and honeybee-driven agriculture have changed the Midwestern landscape\, and how the threat of Colony Collapse Disorder changes everything. \nRegister here.

Learn how to properly identify and treat invasive species\, winter is one of the best times of the year for woody invasive control. \nTreatment will involve cut stump herbicide application on targeted species that are growing unchecked. SUMMARY:Mill Race Park Invasive Species Project
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will work with the Grandville Environmental Sustainability Committee and the expert staff of the Kent Conservation District to address several non-native invasive plant species that are degrading the natural areas of Mill Race Park. \nThe project is outdoors\, and please dress for the weather. Some areas will likely be muddy\, and we strongly encourage waterproof boots. \nPlease bring your own water and snacks. All necessary instructions\, tools and supplies\, including light work gloves\, will be provided on site. Waiver forms will be required. This family-friendly project does involve sharp objects and herbicide; children under 13 not permitted. Children 13 to 17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or designated organization leader for the duration of the event. \nPets are not permitted at volunteer events due to safety concerns. \nIn the event of rain\, the project will be rescheduled to Saturday Feb 17th. Her academic journey\, grounded in a solid understanding of statistics and systems-thinking\, has shaped a unique perspective that she brings to her professional endeavors. \nTim Dekker\, PHD\, PE\, is the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LimnoTech. Tim is an Environmental and Water Resources Engineer with expertise in river\, lake\, and estuary remediation and restoration. Tim has led scientific studies and technical projects in natural and urban water systems throughout North America\, describing the dynamics of surface water\, sediments\, and groundwater systems; analyzing and mitigating the effects of urban flooding\, analyzing contaminant fate and transport; and applying contaminant forensic techniques to understand the history of contaminated sites.
